“Everyone has the right to safety”
Facts
Studies have shown that people with disabilities and reduced mobility are at greater risk of injury or death in the event of a fire.
Disabled and bedridden individuals account for:
- 8% of all fire related deaths
- 2% of fire related injuries
Individuals over the age of 65 account for:
- 18% of fire related deaths
- 7% of fire related injuries
In Canada, over 13% of the population (over 4 million people) is over the age of 65 and almost half of those people have some form of disability.
The aging population will increase the over 65 category by the millions which will cause the number of at risk Canadians to grow.
